Review: Skin Free skincare - Part 1

A couple of weeks ago, I received a very nice package of products from Skin Free skincare.  This is a company that specializes in products targeted at individuals with extremely sensitive skin.  As a long-term sufferer of eczema, I was excited to give these products a go, and specifically requested for the products that would help me with healing my eczema totally.

So far, I have managed to try the following two products:

The Skin Free™ Super Moisture Butter Creme™ was something I had requested for, but the Skin Free™ Niaouli Butter Stick™ was a product that Skin Free had recommended for me, based on my eczema concerns.

It was easy for me to use these two products hand in hand because I applied both to the same areas on my body.  The first thing that struck me about these products was how simple they were packed.  White is definitely a good color to use on the packaging of skincare products.

I immediately opened up the bottle of butter creme and took a whiff of it.  I didn’t smell anything.  I know it says “No Fragrance” on the bottle, but I couldn’t believe it was really fragrance-less.  And I love that.  I apply the butter creme before I sleep, so I don’t fancy strong smelling stuff lingering on my skin for hours.  I know some people like fragrance, but I use perfume if I want fragrance on me.  :)

When I applied the butter creme, it was very light and absorbed quickly into my skin.  There was no greasy feeling at all!  I would have liked it a tad *heavier* though, because when I woke up in the morning, my hands and feet did not feel that moist anymore.  But then again, it is a “lighter creme” version of the richer and thicker Skin Free™ Super Moisture Body Balm™.  On the whole, I think the butter creme I used is a very suitable lotion to be used in the daytime and in the office, because after applying, I don’t need to worry about the computer keyboard going all gooey and greasy!

As with all lotions, the Skin Free™ Super Moisture Butter Creme™ works best if applied after a shower, when the skin is moist.

Skin Free™ Super Moisture Butter Creme™

Pros: Absolutely fragrance free.  Easily absorbed into skin.

Cons: Effects do not last through the night.  Good for daytime use though.

I also found that the Skin Free™ Super Moisture Butter Creme™ is the perfect complement to the Skin Free™ Niaouli Butter Stick™.  The butter stick is made from a combination of the aromatic Niaouli oil with the other healing oils of Olive, Sweet Almond, Cocoa Butter and Shea in a soy base to make a convenient butter for easy application on skin problem areas.   I learnt that the Melaleuca family contains three notable trees that contribute to the healing world: Tea tree, Cajeput, and Niaouli. After discovering this oil in the South Pacific region, the French used Niaouli in antibacterial spray to disinfect hospital wards.  The Niaouli Butter Stick is very effective for chapped or rough skin.

The butter stick comes in a 1oz packaging.  Because it is a stick applicator, I at first thought I had to twist the tube (like a lipstick) to apply it.  When I found I could not twist it, I proceeded to scrape the contents out with my fingernails and then applied it.  I only discovered yesterday that the stick had to be PUSHED up!

When I scraped it, I found the contents rather dry and not like the typical balm.  However, it went on really well on my heels, knees and elbows.  I topped up the application with the butter creme and I was good to go!

I really love how the butter stick works on my eczema.  My skin feels much smoother now, and even my cracked heels are looking significantly smoother.  And because of its not-too-moist texture, I can walk around immediately after applying it to my heels!

Another thing I noticed is that the word “Niaouli” was spelled incorrectly on the bottle.  No biggie I guess, but it would be a nice touch to correct it.

It certainly feels that with frequent use, these products will do a world of good in treating skin conditions like eczema.

Skin Free™ Niaouli Butter Stick™

Pros: Not greasy but works like a charm.  Nice light scent.

Cons: Difficult to push up tube, would be nice to have a twist-up tube design instead.

All Skin Free skincare products are available online at the Skin Free store (free shipping on orders $25 and more), or at other locations such as cvs.com, walgreens.com and drugstore.com.   You can find more locations where the products are available at the Store Locator section.

Watch out for my review of the other two Skin Free products soon!
